Baku - Gobustan Mud Volcano

Gobustan geographical region is situated in the west-south of Baku. The meaning of the word «Gobustan» is derived from two words «gobu» – «ravine» and «stan»- «place», i.e. ravine area. The word «gobu» is also of Turkic origin and means «a dried up river valley».

The tour will start off from Gobustan Museum where you will see ancient human bones, work tools used in back to thousand years ago. Then, you will advance to the mountain in order to see real rock paintings in the open air museum. Most people don’t travel to Gobustan for the mud volcanoes – they come for the petroglyphs. Petroglyphs are symbolic and figurative ‘drawings’ made by early humans by chiselling shapes into the patina of exposed rock. Petroglyphic ‘art’ (crude as it may be) is evidence of the development of symbolic thinking, making it one of the most important artifacts of early human history. Gobustan’s petroglyphs date back up to 40,000 years to the Upper Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. More than 6,000 individual carvings were discovered here in the 1930s and have been protected through the Gobustan National Park (Gobustan Milli Parkı) ever since.

Later on the tour will continue to the Mud Volcano which is not far from Gobustan National Museum.

Azerbaijan keeps the first place in the world for the number of mud volcanoes. About 300 mud volcanoes are to be found in Azerbaijan – at the shore, in the sea and on islands. During this trip you will get a great chance to see these amazing active volcanoes from very close distance. Mud volcanoes are not really volcanoes at all, but take their name from their resemblance to the molten-lava kind. Mud volcanoes come in all shapes and sizes and many are very small. Because they have no lava and rarely erupt, it’s safe to get up close.

Lunch & dinner will be suggest by local guide at your preference and expense.

Return to Baku. The excursion to Gobustan will be rounded up with a drop-off at the hotel/your place.
