PLACES OF INTEREST
1. Muzium Diraja Kedah (Kedah Royal Museum)
Feel like royalty in the former residence of the Sultan of Kedah while walking through amazing displays which include the royal carriages and boats. Local Kedahans refer to this museum by one of its many nicknames including Istana Kota Setar, Istana Mak Wan Besar, Istana Pelamin and Rumah Pelamin.

2. Kota Kuala Kedah (Kuala Kedah Fort)
This historical landmark was originally constructed by the Malay people in 1771 during the reign of Sultan Muhammad Jiwa to protect the kingdom of Kedah from naval attacks. It had since been rebuilt for visitors to marvel at the red brick structure from days gone by.

3. Menara Alor Setar (Alor Setar Tower)
An iconic modern symbol of the city, it stands 165.5 metres tall and offers a breath-taking view of the city’s skyline. You can dine in the rotating restaurant atop of the tower as well.

4. Masjid Zahir (Zahir State Mosque)
Built in 1912, this grand state mosque in the heart of the city is one of the finest and oldest mosques in the country—truly an architectural wonder worthy of a visit. Its style was inspired by Masjid Azizi in Sumatera, Indonesia, which has five main domes that represents the five pillars of Islam.

5. Wat Nikrodharam
Located downtown is the most imposing Buddhist temple complex in the state, resplendent with gilded roofs and colourful mosaic walls. Built in 1968, the temple infuses a unique mix of Thai and Chinese motifs in its architectural style and decor.

6. Muzium Arkeologi Lembah Bujang
Observe ancient artefacts and temple ruins in Lembah Bujang, believed to be the oldest centre of international trade and richest archaeological site in Malaysia, surrounded by exotic flora and fauna within the lush tropical forest.

7. Muzium Padi
Situated in front of Mount Keriang and surrounded by lush greens, this modern museum stands out even from a distance. Inside, everything and anything related to paddy and rice is on display, and you can even experience a bullock cart ride (kereta lembu) on weekends.

8. Hutan Lipur Sungai Sedim
This elephant-shaped limestone hill rises from the flat paddies. Adventure seekers can trek, go rock climbing, explore caves and even search for some cave crystals. The nearby recreational park features walking trails and panoramic viewing gazebos.

9. Pusat Rekreasi Air Panas Ulu Legong
Said to be the only 24-hour hot spring in Malaysia, this famous attraction is the place to be for a stress-relieving therapeutic dip. Chalets, rooms and dorms are available for rent if you choose to have a relaxing day or two here.

10. Pekan Rabu
Although it means ‘Wednesday Market’, it opens daily and offers handicrafts, clothes, accessories and everything else under the sun! Pro tip: bargain like a local and say “mintak kurang”, which means to ask for a discount.

11. Bukit Kayu Hitam
Marking the end of the Malaysia Federal Route 1, the longest Malaysian road, the town on the border of Kedah and Thailand is where you can buy duty-free items such as cigarettes, chocolates and liquor.
